Pastor’s Perspective: 15 Years

Dear Calvary Family,

Today marks our 15th anniversary as a church! On Jan 3rd, 2010, Calvary Chapel Farmville had our first Sunday AM service in a cold barn, for there was no room for us in the churches?Within a few weeks we were meeting in the PEFYA Gym, and 6 months later we moved to Rt 460 on Simpson Rd. In May of 2013, we moved into our current location here at 302 Industrial park Rd. Planting a church can be a daunting task. From developing a leadership team you can trust, to the need to purchase everything like sound equipment, chairs, tables, music stands, anointing oil, instruments, and coffee makers. At times this journey felt overwhelming, but one important lesson learned in the early years, that still applies today is, “Where God guides, He provides” and provide He did.

In these 15 years we have experienced division and unity, growth and decline, birth and death, divorce and weddings, success and failure, but through it all, faithful discipleship. We have taught verse-by-verse, chapter-by-chapter, through over 60 books of the Bible, many of those books several times. Last week we finished Acts, our 3rd time through that book. Not counting the many children’s classes, we have led well over 4,500 Bibles studies. Many wonderful leaders have served alongside Sherri and I over these 15 years, without this support and help, we would not be here today. May we worship our Lord and Savior for another year to proclaim the good news of salvation, setting the captive free from sin to serve a God who loves us and calls us His own!

On Sunday we begin another amazing study, the Old testament book of Joshua. Our theme for 2025 is “A Venture in Faith”. The book of Joshua will teach us many valuable lessons on faith. God called Joshua to take the place of Moses as the leader of Israel and to lead them through the Jordon river, promising to give them the promised land. The area marked out by God was 10 times bigger than the state of Israel ever controlled, even under Solomon. God said they must place their feet on the land and take it by faith, Israel left a lot on the table. How much of all God has promised us have we received by faith?

This Sunday we also share a carry in meal to start the year, and next Sunday, Jan 12th will be our annual Vision Sunday. We would love for everyone to attend this special service.

Blessings, and Happy New Year!

Pastor Marv
