Pastor’s Perspective: A Powerless Life

Dear Calvary family,

In Acts 19, we find the Apostle Paul, asking 12 men in Ephesus about their baptism of the Holy Spirit. It should be our desire to be full of the presence of God, immersed in the Holy Spirit, and overflowing with His presence. Yet, for many believers in Jesus Christ, the baptism of the Holy Spirit remains a mysterious, elusive experience. Our 2024 CCF theme on Vision Sunday was dependance on the Holy Spirit. May we continue in our study of the Holy Spirit, experiencing the power that God has in store for His followers through the Spirit. Are you serving the Lord with power? Are you plodding along, striving to do the will of the Lord, but void of the joy and the power of the Holy Spirit?

It is my desire and prayer for each of us to walk in the Spirit, to live each day in dependance on the Holy Spirit and experience the reality of the literal power of the His presence. How is this power expressed? The spiritual gifts given to us by Jesus, are supernatural abilities. But walking in the Spirit is more than just doing things that are supernatural, it also involves a heart full of love and faith. Spiritual gifts without love fall far short of fully walking in the Spirit. The power of the Holy Spirit will be expressed in different ways with different people. May we all come with open hearts, full of faith, simply trusting Jesus to empower us fully for His work.

A powerless life is one constantly giving in to temptations. Fear, anxiety, worry, depression, anger…. the list goes on of the things that overwhelm a powerless Christian. I too, at times, have struggled with powerless Christian living throughout my years as a believer in Christ. Join me in simple faith and trust in Jesus to fill us to overflowing with the mighty power of God! Contentment, joy and the ability to endure various hardships, are often the greatest signs of a life filled with the Spirit.

I want to encourage all of us to take the time to enjoy this beautiful Fall season! We here in south central VA are blessed with incredible weather, however, we know that many people in the south are living in very dire conditions. May we have compassion for the hurting, may we continue in prayer for our brothers and sisters in the aftermath of the storms. This morning, we were able to send 50-60 warm coats the SW VA, along with a few guys who will be helping flood victims. Pray for continued guidance to help, and for the Lord to open doors for the gospel.

See you Sunday!
Pastor Marv
