Pastor’s Perspective: Revolution in the Church

Dear Calvary Family,

Since Former President Donald Trump won the election, the word revolution has been all over the news. The term revolution in its simplest form is change. In government, a revolution involves a sudden, fundamental change in the way a country is governed. As we observe our former and future president sharing vision, and picking cabinet members, it appears a significant revolution is in the air. Change can be hard, but in many cases, it brings a fresh perspective and forces us to evaluate status quo, which is good to do from time to time.

Is the church in need of a revolution as well? Are we comfortable just riding the upcoming political wave? I believe the church of the living God has an open door to lead a great spiritual revolution in our country. So many people have experienced the burn-out of failed political promises in government, but also, and more importantly, empty religion in churches who have walked away from sound exposition of the Word of God. Man’s opinion about God has replaced the clear revelation of God found in the Holy Bible. Come Holy Spirit, revive the church today!

Another aspect of revolution in the church involves the style and format of how a church service is carried out. It is easy to remain stuck in something that was good in the 60’s, 80’s, or even yesterday. Pews vs chairs, choir’s vs worship bands, liturgical style readings vs. verse-by-verse teaching through the entire Bible, scripted prayers vs spontaneous prayers, private mandatory confessions vs public voluntary confessions. The church of God has experienced several major revolutions throughout history. May we open our hearts and minds to a new way of doing things, while remaining steadfast in keeping Christ Jesus at the center of our worship. May His enduring Word always take center stage at our gatherings, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit move among us unhindered!

Thanksgiving month at Calvary Chapel continues. I look forward to more November testimonies from many of you as we reflect on the goodness of God through the good times and hardships of life. Sunday morning testimonies are pre-recorded, Wed evenings testimonies are live and  in-person. May each of us be inspired by the thankful spirit among us, praise be to God for His unfailing love!
