Pastor’s Perspective: A Strong Core
Dear Calvary Family,
Fitness experts among us know the value of good core physical health. The muscles of the abdomen and lower back work together to stabilize the spine and provide a strong foundation for movement. A strong, healthy core makes the entire body function better.
As a church family, we also have core doctrinal values. In our personal lives and families, core values concerning time, commitments, and relationships have a lasting impact over the years. Over the next two weeks, as we finish the book of Nehemiah, we will see how the leaders of the day strengthened the core of a fledgling nation.
Nehemiah had a strong conviction about his calling to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem; he succeeded even in the face of tremendous opposition. In chapters 8–9, for the Jewish people, the reading of God’s Word brought about repentance, fasting, prayer, and the restoration of forgotten feasts and celebrations. This week, in chapters 10–11, we see the signing of a covenant, a commitment to give a tithe, and a willingness to relocate. All of these were important for core building among the scattered people.
How strong is your core? Are you pulled around by every wind and doctrine? Is your schedule a frazzled jumble of chaos? Are you on the verge of losing your grip? Do you have peace in your heart when your head hits the pillow at night?
If you struggle with some of these, you are not alone. But thank God—He can restore us. God can rebuild in us a solid core that endures and thrives, even in the face of trials and temptations. May our faith grow stronger, our love deeper, and may humility always be present as the core of our being is built up.
Tomorrow (Sat, Aug. 23, 9:00 AM) is our family Summer Clean & Organize Day at CCF! Many hands will make the work light as we go through storage closets, nooks, and crannies and bring order once again.
See you soon!
