Why should we serve?

7 Reasons to Serve Like Jesus

  1. Serving mirrors the life, ministry, and sacrifice of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Jesus said in Matthew 20:28,” the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
  2. Serving is the response of obedience to the clear command of God.  Jesus, quoting from the Old Testament said in Luke 4:8, ” For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ “
  3. Serving, as Christ has commanded, is one of the primary ways we love and honor the Lord with our lives.  Jesus instructed and encouraged His disciples in John 14:21 stating, “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father…”
  4. Serving meets the various needs of other people; both Christians and non-believers.  The Apostle Paul said of his life of service in I Corinthians 9:19, “I have made myself a servant to all.”
  5. Serving and caring for one another is a light and witness to the unsaved world.  Jesus said in John 13:35, “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
  6. Serving takes our eyes off of ourselves and allows us focus on the care and condition of others. The Apostle Paul states in Philippians 2:3-4, “…In in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.  Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”
  7. Serving is a blessing.  Not only is the church family blessed and individual lives touched but we are blessed as we serve.  Acts 20:35 reminds us: remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive”.
